You have used the guide and obtained the perfect jewel for your loved one or yourself, but something that is not taken care of or maintained loses its value and sheen. While silver is quite sturdy, durable and does not spoil easily, proper care and right precautions administered to silver jewellery will ensure that they shine brighter and last longer. It is not that difficult caring for silver jewellery. Just follow these few do’s and don’ts, and your jewels will look as bright as a new sunny day.

The first thing to do is to ensure that you wear your silver jewellery often. This is a good idea because the oils from your body help to keep the jewels clean and reduce their tarnishing rate. This is the first precaution, but not necessarily the best option. When you are not wearing your silver jewellery, store them in airtight bags or boxes.

Do not throw or misplace the bag that came with the jewellery. There is a reason as to why it was delivered in that box; to protect your jewellery from scratches. Silver is not scratch proof; therefore, do store it next to articles that can rub against them.

Last but not least, clean your jewellery with a 100% soft cotton cloth.

On the other hand, never store your jewellery in open air. Humidity or too much sunshine causes the jewellery to tarnish and fade quickly. The presence of a golden hue residue is the first sign of fading jewellery and in the end, they will turn black
.
Do not store your jewellery on direct contact with wooden surfaces. Natural wood has acids that spoil the finish of your silver. The worst in that category is oak wooden surface.

It is also not advisable to store your silver jewellery with other metals such as coins. These items damage the fineness of the silver as well.

Do not wrap your jewellery in paper and coarse fabrics. Paper is made from wood and contains small amount of wood fibres which causes small and unnoticeable scratches on the silver surface. Dirty surfaces on coarse fabrics also scratch the surface as well.

The right care and good maintenance ensures that your silver maintains its sparkle for longer. Always clean your silver regularly with a light detergent that is free of phosphate.
